Sermon Outline

1. Our sexual conduct matters greatly to God, and anything that matters to God should matter to us. (1 Corinthians 6:18)

2. The debate surrounding homosexuality is more than a debate about sexual morality; it’s a debate about the authority of Scripture. (2 Timothy 4:3)

In matters of morality we either submit to God’s Word as the final authority or we make God small and ourselves large by determining our own way. (Romans 12:2)

3. God’s people must be equipped to offer a compassionate but uncompromised witness to those damaged by sin - including counterfeit sexuality. (Luke 19:10;1 Peter 3:15)

The Framework of Truth

1. Our identity should be based on God’s Word and our relationship with Him - not sexual impulses. The latter is a subtle form of idolatry. (Colossians 3:17)

2. We must interpret our experience in light of Scripture – not Scripture in light of our experience!

3. We cannot be more compassionate than God! All attempts to be so only serve to increase human suffering. (Proverbs 14:12)

4. We must not defend truth in ways that violate it; in anger, disrespect, or self-righteousness! (1 Peter 3:15)

5. God condemns homosexual conduct - not attraction. The latter constitutes temptation and temptation isn’t sin. (James 1:12)

6. Homosexual conduct is just one expression of human sin and brokenness - not the worst. (Galatians 5:19-21)

7. Tolerance isn’t the chief of virtues - love is! (Matthew 22:3-40; Revelation 2:2- 20)

8. When addressing homosexuality two attitudes are essential: humility and love. (Galatians 6:1)
