Sermon Outline

What Is God Up To Now?

Dr. Lance Wallnau

Sunday November 13, 2016

Theme – God will use the Church to impart Heavenly wisdom into the American public sphere. There is a direct relationship between our experiences in life, what we believe about those experiences, decisions we make from those beliefs, and the results that come from our decisions.  Each area of our life will either be blessed by God or lost to bad decisions.

Wisdom

  • Wisdom can be defined as “a study of the obvious.”

  • The Bible is full of wisdom.  Therefore, the Bible contains what is obvious; although some things may not be obvious until we see – and understand – them.

Apostolic leadership

  • Ancient navies used boats known as “apostolic ships” that went first to colonize a place, so everyone that followed would find a place that had been improved and familiar to their experiences.

  • Jesus is our lead apostle who goes ahead of us into the world to prepare it for our arrival.

  • The goal of the apostolic is to bring good things from Heaven to earth.  It translates heavenly ideas into ways of knowing that humans can understand.

  • Every area of our lives that we don’t take care of – and colonize – the devil will take over.

  • Every area of our lives will either be blessed by God or lost to bad decisions.

The Holy Spirit leads the Church in society

  • God placed an entrepreneurial, creative spirit in us.

  • This spirit allows us to see an ultimate vision.

  • Each step in the process of reaching the vision will be revealed by the Holy Spirit if we pray in the Spirit.

  • Romans 8:26 – “Likewise, the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses.  For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.  Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God.”

  • God will use the Christian Church – of which Covenant Church is a key part – to impart Heavenly wisdom into the public sphere of the United States.

The steps toward a harvest

  • We each have experiences in life.

  • What we believe about those experiences determines how we interpret the things that happen to us.

    • The job of the church is to teach how to interpet events.

    • 2 Timothy 4:3-4 – “For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables.”

    • Mark 4:24 – “Then He said to them, “Take heed what you hear.  With the same measure you use, it will be measured to you; and to you who hear, more will be given.””

    • Luke 8:18 – “Therefore take heed how you hear.  For whoever has, to him more will be given; and whoever does not have, even what he seems to have will be taken from him.”

  • We make decisions based on our interpretations.

  • The end results come from the decisions we make.

The Church needs to be involved in public sector decision-making

  • If we do our job as Christians – and if the Church gets involved – America will make good decisions.

  • Christians – and Covenant Church – have an opportunity (and the responsibility) to be involved in the American public sphere where decisions are made.

  • The end result will be outcomes that bless everyone.

Reflective Questions for What Is God Up To Now?

  1. Dr. Wallnau said the entrepreneurial, creative spirit enables us to see an outcome, but that we should trust the steps to getting there to the Holy Spirit.  Do you have an experience where this worked in your life?

  2. What was the purpose of the old apostolic ships?  Does this have a correlation to how the Christian Church might help inform public decision-making?

  3. Envision an example of how a Christian interpretation of events might influence the nature of the ultimate outcome.  Can you describe what happened – and how it happened – in your vision?
