Matthew 16:13-19

The Church is Jesus’ idea.

Could it be that the Church is weak because followers of Christ don’t understand what it means to be the Church?

One of the reasons the Church in America is weak is our concept of membership.

In the New Testament, baptism was the membership ceremony.

Imperium: supreme power of absolute dominion

  • What has ultimate authority in our lives?
  • What must everything in our lives bow to?

As Christians, we have dual citizenship.

New Testament followers of Christ knew they were joining a New Kingdom in a fallen world.

 

They were baptized by faith into the universal Church, but they belonged to the local church.
