Sermon Outline

1 Samuel 13:13-14

David reveals God’s nature.

Psalm 11:1

  • The word “Lord” is used five times within this passage of seven verses.
    • This particular “Lord” means Jehovah, or tetragrammaton (His Name) Yahweh, YHWH, or JHVH, which is referred to 6510 times in scripture.
    • He is self-existent.
    • His name is a covenantal name. It is used by those who know Him or His chosen people.
    • It is in covenant (YHWH) that David has taken his safety or hope.
    • David understood he doesn’t need to depend on himself, but God would keep him safe.
  • David starts with “In the Lord I take refuge.”

Psalm 11:2

  • The NLT version reveals the stringing of the bow in more clarity. It shows the wicked have preparation against those who have an up-right heart.

Psalm 11:3

  • David is addressing those who are in fear that the nation may come to ruin.
  • The laws and order of society are based on the Lord’s rule.
  • While some gave David the best advice they could, David had a different view point in his heart.

Psalm 11:4

  • David’s viewpoint was that of heaven because he knew where God was.
  • God rules in Heaven and His throne is there with no others to oppose righteousness and judgment. The Lord rules over the earth from where He is, and David comprehended that.
  • God is omniscient.

Psalm 11:5

  • God is examining and testing the sons of men, meaning He refines the righteous.

Psalm 11:6

  • David knows with his trust in God, who is righteous, those who are wicked will receive quick judgment from God.

Psalm 11:7

  • Yahweh is righteous and He delights in justice. Those who trust in Him by faith, have access to Him. By trusting and abiding in Him through faith, His presence is a reward of the upright along with the many blessing that follow.
