1. We all have appetites that can only be awakened by the Word, v. 44

“Your testimonies are wonderful; therefore my soul keeps them. The unfolding of your words gives light; it imparts understanding to the simple. I open my mouth and pant, because I long for your commandments.” -Psalm 119:129-131

Five question we have to answer concerning the Bible…

a) Is the Bible divine?

b) Is the Bible true?

c) Is the Bible clear?

d) Is the Bible sufficient?

e) Is the Bible personally authoritative?

2. The Gospel is the only story big enough to live in, v. 45-47

What Paul said was...

a) the Gospel is a historical fact, v. 16-22

b) Jesus is God’s solution to man’s need, v. 23-25

c) Jesus was innocent yet died for the guilty and rose again, v. 26-37

d) only in Jesus can you find forgiveness and freedom, v. 38-39

Doctrine informs how you tell the Story, v. 48-49

Doctrine refers to the entire body of essential theological truths that define and describe the message of Christianity. “Christians learn doctrine in order to participate more deeply, passionately and truthfully in the drama of redemption.” -Kevin Vanhoozer

Experiences bring fullness, v. 50-52

Mental worship…

  1. Of the five questions about the Bible, which one do you most need to answer?
  2.  How often are you comforted by what you believe? (biblical doctrine)
  3. When it comes to having spiritual conversations, do you rely on people’s curiosity or the commands of God for your motivation?
  4. In what ways does the Bible alter and affect your daily living?
  5. What experiences do you look to in order to be filled spiritually?
