Sermon Outline

Matthew is a call to live by a new set of life rules.

Matthew 4:1

Matthew is building a case for Jesus as Messiah.

Matthew is teaching the way of the Kingdom of Heaven.

What does Kingdom mean?

Jesus is led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.

James 1:13-14

The devil is not seen as just an evil source or power. The devil is personified in scripture.

  • He was a former archangel who wanted to overthrow God.
  • He was tempter in the garden and in the wilderness.

Jesus speaks of him inJohn 10:10.

1 Peter 5:8

2 Corinthians 11:14

We are then taught that he is not alone.

  • Ephesians 6:10-12
  • 2 Corinthians 4:3-4

We have an enemy.

How did Jesus overcome the enemy?

Matthew talks about the temptations inMatthew 4:3.

John 8:28

The tempter appeals to personal appetite. Jesus was hungry, so He was told to use His power to feed Himself.

The purpose of the Christian is to live as a revelation of God’s glory.

InMatthew 4:6, the enemy tempted Jesus to test God.

James 1:2-4

The enemy tempts us to give up on God in time of testing. We should be patient with the promises of God.

The tempter appealed to personal gain inMatthew 4:8-9

These are the ways the enemy will tempt us.

1 John 2:16-17

Every offer from the tempter was twisted. Jesus answered every offer with the Word.

Matthew 4:10

Victory always starts here. Always worship God.
