Sermon Outline

Matthew 7:7-12

Jesus is pointing to the reward of prayer.

A key passage is one that sums up a doctrinal position.

These passages teach believers to ask.

“Ask and it will be given.” Does this mean we have authority in prayer?

James 4:3

Matthew 6:9-10

Matthew 7:11

Things required in asking:

  • Is this within the will of the Kingdom?
  • Is our motive right in asking?

In Prayer:

  • Are we asking or telling?
  • Are we submitted or demanding?

The call is to seek God’s will and persist in it.

From the passages in Matthew 7, the second revelation is to “Seek and you will find.”

Seek the clear will of God.

1 Timothy 2:1-4

We see here that it is good to pray for:

  • all people,
  • those in power over us, and
  • those far from God.

James 1:5

2 Chronicles 7:14

Requirements:

  • We are to humble ourselves and recognize our need for God.
  • We are to pray and seek God’s presence.
  • We are to turn from our wicked ways.

Seek God’s wisdom and personal correction.

What if God’s will is not clearly spelled out?

Romans 8:14

This requires the seeking part of prayer.

Matthew 6:33

“Knock and it will be opened.”

Matthew 7:12

Consider that our prayers are tied to our attitudes toward others.
