Sermon Outline

Matthew 6:8-10

Prayer is:

  • an act of humility.
  • an act of spiritual conflict.
  • an act of relationship.
  • a place I open my heart and mind to God’s will.

If we understood the aspect of how the Kingdom of God works, we would not neglect prayer.

How does Jesus teach us to approach God?

Jesus starts His lesson on prayer with, “Our Father.”

  • Fathers are called to carry the nature of God the Father into their homes, but some don’t. They are called to be loving, caring, providers, protectors, suppliers, teachers, consistent, dependable, and someone worthy of honor.
  • The first commandment with promise is to honor your father and mother.

Jesus goes on to say “hallowed be thy name,” which means holy, consecrated, sacred, revered.

In Jewish culture the formal name of God is known as a Tetragrammaton. It refers to four letters -YHWH. We added the vowels and say YAHWEH.

Other names:

  • Adoni - “my Lord”
  • Hashem - “the Name”
  • Elokim - “God talking about His attributes of justice and power”

In whatever form used, it is wise to not use His name lightly.

We pray for things using Jesus’ name.
