How We Worship and Praise

Psalm 63:1-4

First, an overarching principle: Our worship and praise should always be conducted in ways that are both biblical and orderly.

Singing

Psalm 95:1-2 (ESV)

Lifting Hands

In Jewish culture, hands were lifted both in praise and prayer.

Regarding praise:

  • Psalm 63:4
  • Psalm 134:2
  • Nehemiah 8:6

Clapping

  • Psalm 47:1
  • Psalm 98:8
  • Isaiah 55:12

Even nature claps its hands!

Clapping in each of these verses is associated with joy.

Applause is “approval or praise expressed by clapping.”

Speaking Out

  • Revelation 4:8
  • Revelation 4:10-11
  • Revelation 7:11-12

In each of these instances we see worshipers speaking their worship and praise.

Passion

Is it ok to take pleasure in worshiping and praising God?

It is not only authentic to take pleasure in pleasing someone we love; it dignifies what we do.

God doesn’t desire worshipers who worship out of duty;
Everything we do must begin with love for God.

Isaiah 29:13-14

We can faithfully follow human rules and our hearts can still be far from God.

Jonathan Edwards: Light and Heat
