The Book of Proverbs


Authorship
The book of Proverbs has been described as a collection of collections.

The main author is Solomon.

Solomon authored three books: Ecclesiastes, Proverbs and Song of Solomon.


Structure

  • Chapters 1-9 are seen as preface or introduction to the concept of wisdom.
  • Chapters 10-22:16 is the first volume of Solomon’s proverbs.
    At this point we begin to experience short-sentence sayings of proverbs. Most common is the two-line proverbs.
  • Chapters 22:17-24:24 various unnamed authors.
  • Chapters 25:1-29:27 Proverbs of Solomon collected by the men of Hezekiah, King of Judah
  • Chapters 30-31 named authors.



Purpose 
Proverbs 1:1–7

  • Practical wisdom for living is the central theme.
  • The beginning of wisdom is fear of God.
  • To give wisdom to the young and lacking.
  • To instruct the wise to be wiser still.

How to View Proverbs

  1. Proverbs gives good advice, (not necessarily regarding sin).
    •  Proverbs 27:17; 23:29-30; 22.29; 11:14

  2. Proverbs are not necessarily promises.
    •  Proverbs 3:9–10

  3. Proverbs show how the Kingdom of God works.
    •  Proverbs 21:13; 19:17; 18:10; 17:3; 16:18

  4. Proverbs show how the kingdom of the world works.
    •  Proverbs 20:6; 16:18

  5. Proverbs reveal wisdom and foolishness.
    •  Proverbs 15:28; 14:29

  6. Proverbs, at times, give us promises.


The proverbs work like rain - for the righteous and the unrighteous.

Approach Proverbs as a mentor to your life and you will grow brighter and brighter.
