Avoiding Foolishness


Proverbs 18:2 

The Simple - The young and/or inexperienced. The teacher does not condemn them unless they ignore advice.

The Fool - The person who chooses to find his guidance/wisdom someplace besides the instructions of God.

The Wicked - The person who knows and chooses to act in ways that reject the wisdom of God; the adulterer, the drunk, the liar.

The Evil - The person who hurts others in his wickedness or tries to influence others to wickedness.

The Righteous - Those who keep the moral law. Under grace, people covered by Jesus.

The Wise  - Those who accept God’s instruction and do as He instructs. 


The main title for this series is: The Art of Living

Some people build an artful life.  
An artful life is a reflection of the wisdom of God

Other people make a mess of life.  
We need to seek wisdom. 

James 1:5

Proverbs 18:2 
He doesn’t take joy in learning. He is fine with what he knows. 

We are told in the Proverbs to cry out for insight and understanding. We are to pray about all areas of life and ask the Holy Spirit to teach us. 


Proverbs 19:3
This is a sign of a man’s foolishness. When we don’t get the results in life that we want, we question God instead of ourselves.   


Proverbs 19:13
This takes a different twist. This is the parent who doesn’t recognize his children's foolish decisions and entrusts them with valuable things in life.

There are times when you discover that all your answers will simply lead to empty arguments


Proverbs 27:22


There are two answers here: 

  • They have not learned. There is hope for this person. You answer their statements.

  • There are times when the crowd is listening, and you answer for their sake.


Proverbs 28:26
This is a classic definition of the fool. He thinks he is smart and has a better way than God. 

The promise is that those who walk in God’s way will be delivered. 


Proverbs 15:5
Proverbs uses two definitions of a Father’s instruction:

  1.  God speaking to us.

  2. Wise earthly parents speaking to us.


We are called to honor our mother and father. We even treat the bad ones with love and respect. However, Jesus teaches us to turn from the ways of parents who reject Him.
