Sermon Outline

Matthew 5:33-42

The issues that Jesus brings to their attention:

  • They were making oaths and not being honest.
  • Their conversations lacked integrity.

Jesus is referring to the following scriptures:

  • Exodus 20:7
  • Leviticus 19:12
  • Deuteronomy 23:21

What Christ is sharing with them:

  • We must not swear on anything to prove our point.
  • You are only as good as your word.

Do not swear by any other creature or thing.

It is a matter of integrity.

Luke 22:31-34

Let your “yes” be your “yes” and your “no” be your “no.”

James 5:12

An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.

Jesus is trying to get them to see that, as those who follow God, we believe in grace.

What was the Old Testament punishment, in the cases of injury or damage?

  • Exodus 21:23-24
  • Leviticus 24:20
  • Deuteronomy 19:21

What is the New Testament precept?

  • Jesus was trying to get them to see through His eyes.
  • Jesus wants us to show grace.

Jesus was showing them what it means to die to self.

1 Peter 2:21-24

Three questions to ponder regarding integrity and grace:

  1. Have I been truthful in my conversations and did my actions follow my speech?
  2. Have I been an example of Christlikeness when others have not been to me?
  3. Is there someone whom I hurt with whom I need to make amends?
