Sermon Outline

John 20:30–31

John was one of the original disciples of Jesus.
Years later as he writes his Gospel, he tells us he is writing it so you may believe that Jesus is the Christ.

At the close of his book he tells of some of the encounters with Jesus.

Thomas will be a skeptic.

Matthew 22:29,
Not understanding The Word of God nor the power of God is the root of skepticism.

This passage in John 20 gives us some insight into how God deals with skeptics.John 20:24–29

Here is an important lesson for those of us whocan be skeptics at times.

Thomas had not bugged out. Thomas was still there.
We are not told why.
1. Maybe the friendships.
2. Maybe his love for Jesus.
3. Maybe because he had seen way too much to just walk away.

Thomas had set a pretty high standard for him to believe.

If you’re a skeptic, remember, Jesus is patient with sincere skeptics even if their standards are high.

Jesus is not patient with stubbornness.

Have you seen enough, heard enough, sensed in your spirit enough?
Even if you are skeptical, keep showing up, Jesus will be patient with that.

He is going to show you the wisdom of His Word.

He is going to show you the power of His presence.

I have known believers who just haven’t known enough of The Word to stay out of trouble.

I have known believers who are skeptical about some area of the teaching of The Word.

Believer, is there an area of faith that you hear taught but you reject?

Then there is the skeptic about faith.

There are those who just don’t know.
