Sermon Outline

Matthew 6:1-4

The Jewish culture was based on a religious foundation.

Giving to the poor, praying, and fasting are acts of righteousness.

Jesus is saying while they are acts that are righteous, they had become twisted.

Prayer and fasting are acts of humility that recognize our need for God.

Giving to the needy is an act that comes from a Godly heart.

These acts had become twisted. Men had learned to use them to gain status before other men.

In all of the assumptions, the way they were approached were issues of the heart and faith.

If we believe God is our provider, we don’t look for honor in what we give in obedience to God’s leading.

God should get the honor.

In all of their righteous acts, they had found a way to show off their righteousness.

In all acts of righteousness, it is always a question of our heart and our faith.

In all of our works, who gets the glory?

Scripture says “When you pray”… Praying is still the right thing to do.

Scripture says “When you fast”… Fasting is still the right thing to do.

Here is the promise: “And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.”

In all our works, it’s a heart issue and a faith issue.
