Sermon Outline

The disciples asked Jesus all kinds of questions. In the Bible, we are only given one thing that they asked Him to teach them to do: how to pray.

Luke 11:1-2a

We have given you motives to pray:

·         Dependence
·         Desperation
·         Direction

The foundation underneath all other motives to pray is intimacy with the Father.

Matthew 6:5-9a

Matthew 6:5-6 explains the performer position of prayer. Jesus implores us to not pray like a “hypocrite.”

Verses 7-8 explains the manipulator position of prayer. Jesus warns about praying like a “Gentile.” Some translations may say pagan or heathen. The most famous biblical example of this is found
in1 Kings 18:26-29.

Verse 9 explains the child position of prayer. God’s desire for us is that we would pray like a child to their Father.
Galatians 3:26, 4:4-7

Romans 8:15-17
