Sermon Outline

Philippians 2:14-16

How bright do you shine in a crooked generation?

Galatians 5:16-17, 22-25

Kindness

  • We leave an impression on people when we are kind.
  • We also leave an impression on people when we are unkind.
  • Proverbs 11:17
  • In order to live lives that look like Jesus’ life, we need to treat others with kindness.

Unkindness

  • Galatians 5:19-21
  • The opposite of kindness:
  • Hostility – Being rude or hateful to someone.
  • Quarreling – Picking fights and starting angry arguments.
  • Jealousy – This word translates more specifically to having a rivalry with someone.
  • Outbursts of anger – Blowing up at people when you are mad.
  • Selfish Ambition – Willingness to do whatever it takes to promote yourself, even if it hurts others.
  • Dissension and Division – Pinning people against each other.
  • Envy – Being jealous of others.

What kindness is:

  • Luke 6:35
  • Colossians 3:12-13

Things that define kindness:

  • Kindness is selflessness.
  • Kindness is generosity.
  • Kindness is mercy.
  • Kindness is usefulness to others or the willingness to serve others.
  • Kindness is integrity.

We can ask to be held accountable when it comes to kindness.

Reflection question:

  • Do I have any wounds that impact my actions from people’s unkindness to me?
  • Is there anyone that I have been unkind to that I need to apologize to?
  • Where are places in my life where God would have me exercise greater kindness?
