Sermon Outline

Psalm 1:1-6

Why are we giving time to the book of Psalms? 1 Samuel 13:14

The man after God’s own heart was David.

If you want to be a person who is close to God, the book of Psalms will reveal the way of the heart.

Psalm 1 is a wisdom Psalm.

What is wisdom? It is knowing how to act.

Psalm 1:1-6

In Psalm 1, we see the division between the righteous and the wicked.

The righteous are defined as those living by the Law or the morals of God.

The wicked are defined as those who reject the Law or the morals of God.

The very first verse gives the beginning steps of the righteous man.

  • The righteous man is not looking to the wicked for advice and direction in life.
  • The righteous man is not being influenced by the wicked.
  • The righteous man is not hanging out with the scornful.

The scornful are those who mock or undermine the path of righteousness.

God shows the outcome of those errors in clear terms.

  • People who reject God’s Word are defined as wicked.
  • People under this influence become wicked

Two outcomes:

  1. On the day of judgment, they will not stand. They will not be found with the righteous.
  2. They will perish.

If you want to be a person close to God, don’t be influenced by the chaff.

Psalm 1 is about contrast, the wicked and the righteous.

  • The righteous will be blessed or Spirit empowered with joy and peace.
  • The righteous will produce fruit in season and his leaf shall not wither.

Is God speaking about our gardens, or is He speaking about our lives and our children?

What you do in righteousness shall prosper.

The righteous delight in the Law.

The man seeking righteousness not only delights in the Law, he meditates on it day and night. He goes through life asking “What is the right thing to do?”

God knows the way of the righteous.

The basic foundation of righteousness and wickedness is about your approach to God’s revealed word.
