Sermon Outline

When unrighteous anger lingers in our hearts, it can distort our perspective and negatively influence our actions.

Matthew 5:17-22

We miss the intent of God’s word when we read His rules for living without trying to understand why He made them.

Following God’s word is more than keeping dos and don’ts. God wants to transform our hearts.

Jesus calls us to practice self-control not only so that our actions are not ruled by anger but also so that our thoughts are not shaped by it.

2 Corinthians 10:3-5

We are told to take every thought captive and make it obedient to God.

Matthew 5:23-24

We shouldn’t only be concerned with the anger stirred in our hearts, but we should also be concerned about the anger we may have stirred in the hearts of others.

Matthew 5:25-26

Jesus advises us to get our words and actions right with our brothers and sisters before we have to stand before God.

Three Reflection Questions:

  1. Are you holding unrighteous anger in your heart towards someone?
  2. Do you need to reconcile for a wrong you caused that may have stirred unrighteous anger in someone else’s heart?
  3. Do you have unconfessed sin in your life?
