What’s in a Name? | Jehovah Nissi

 

Choose some men to go out and fight the army of Amalek for us. Tomorrow, I will stand at the top of the hill, holding the staff of God in my hand.10 So Joshua did what Moses had commanded and fought the army of Amalek. Meanwhile, Moses, Aaron, and Hur climbed to the top of a nearby hill. 11 As long as Moses held up the staff in his hand, the Israelites had the advantage. But whenever he dropped his hand, the Amalekites gained the advantage. 12 Moses’ arms soon became so tired he could no longer hold them up. So Aaron and Hur found a stone for him to sit on. Then they stood on each side of Moses, holding up his hands. So his hands held steady until sunset. 13 As a result, Joshua overwhelmed the army of Amalek in battle.  14 After the victory, the Lord instructed Moses, “Write this down on a scroll as a permanent reminder, and read it aloud to Joshua: I will erase the memory of Amalek from under heaven.” 15 Moses built an altar there and named it Yahweh-Nissi (which means “the Lord is my banner”). 16 He said, “They have raised their fist against the Lord’s throne, so now the Lord will be at war with Amalek generation after generation.” (Exodus 17:9-16, NLT)

 

 

Key Point: Jehovah Nissi reminds us God is present.

He said, “They have raised their fist against the Lord’s throne, so now the Lord will be at war with Amalek generation after generation.” (Exodus 17:16, NLT)

 

Key Point: Jehovah Nissi gives us courage.

Key Point: Jehovah Nissi should cause us to reflect.

 

…let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.(Matthew 5:16, NIV) 

 

…whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.(1 Corinthians 10:31, NIV)

 

If anyone speaks, they should do so as one who speaks the very words of God. If anyone serves, they should do so with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. (1 Peter 4:11, NIV)

  • Am I living a God-honoring life?
  • Is my life giving glory to God when I’m in public and when I’m in private?
  • Are my words spoken to others God-honoring?
  • Are the words and the posts that I put on my social media accounts glorifying to God?
  • Am I complicit by my inaction when I know someone else is being harmed but I don’t do or say anything to help them?

 

Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. (Philippians 4:8, NIV)
