Sermon Outline

1 Peter 2:4-12

In this passage we see the Church.

Jesus is the Living Stone, rejected by men but chosen of God.

We are like living stones being built into a spiritual house.

In the Church we grow together in holiness, and worship Him in spirit and truth.

The Church:

  • belongs to God and desires the praise of Him who called us,
  • is a people of God by His mercy,
  • sees itself as aliens and strangers in the world, and
  • is called together to live good lives and do good deeds that glorify God.

Jesus is the Living Rock. Through Him we become living stones.

We become a people who are strangers to the world.

What we are to do:

  • Live good lives
  • Do good things

We do that as individuals, and as a people called the Church.

The Church in community and in unity works together.

Why church membership?

How strong is a house if nothing locks the pieces together?

The Holy Spirit is building the Church.

We see one of the clearest metaphors for the Church in chapters 2 and 3 of Revelation. Each Church is a lampstand.

The Bible gives us many metaphors to consider:

  • The Church is the body of Christ.
  • We are a flock.
  • We are an army.
  • We are an outpost or embassy.
  • We are a family.

All of these metaphors call for deep connection.

In Corinthians we are told the we are the temple of the Holy Spirit.

1 Peter 2:4-5

The Church is being built together into a spiritual house. The Spirit of God makes the Church His house.
