We Need a Savior

Matthew 1:18–21 (ESV)

The last few weeks we have been talking about why Christmas Matters, the reasons we should celebrate.

We have looked at the historic reality of Jesus.

We have looked at Jesus being God with us.

We have looked at Jesus the light of the world.

All of these give us reason to celebrate.

Today we come to the most basic and fundamental need that we have. This baby came to save the world from its sin.

He came because we need a savior.

Today, many people don’t have a sense that they need a savior. Yet clearly the coming of Jesus was to save us, to rescue us from a circumstance that we could never free ourselves from.

Romans 3:21–26 (ESV)

To sin means simply to have done life our way instead of God’s way.

When it comes down to the black and white of it, we have committed acts that are against the will of God: we have sinned.

1 John 1:10 (ESV)

So here is the caution sign: If you think you have not sinned, you don’t have the Word in you.

Sin is in us, and sin is deadly.

You see, it’s not only that we have sinned in some measure, we fall short of the Glory of God.

What does this mean?

All of God’s creation is supposed to reflect His Glory.

His wisdom, power, creativity, grace, and ability.

We fall short of the Glory of God.

We don’t reflect His Glory.

We have sinned, and we fall short of the Glory of God for He is not living in us.

He comes to make us new creatures and to fill us with His Glory.

He promises that anyone who calls on His name will be saved.

The birth of Jesus should be the grandest of celebrations.
