Sermon Outline

Songs of Christmas: O Holy Night
Pastor Clark Pfaff

Key Point: What God has done

In Verse 1 we sing:

O holy night the stars are brightly shining
It is the night of the dear Savior's birth
Long lay the world in sin and error pining
Till He appeared and the soul felt its worth
A thrill of hope the weary world rejoices
For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn

Chorus 1:
Fall on your knees
O hear the angel voices
O night divine
O night when Christ was born
O night divine
O night divine

So the Word became human and made his home among us.(John 1:14a, NLT)

For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard. (Romans 3:23, NLT)

All of us, like sheep, have strayed away. We have left God’s paths to follow our own. Yet the Lord laid on him the sins of us all.(Isaiah 53:6, NLT)

We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. (Hebrews 6:19, NIV)

78 Because of God’s tender mercy, the morning light from heaven is about to break upon us 79 to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, and to guide us to the path of peace.”(Luke 1:78-79, NLT)

9 Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.(Philippians 2:9-11, NIV)

Verse 2
Led by the light of faith serenely beaming
With glowing hearts by His cradle we stand
So led by light of a star sweetly gleaming
Here came the wise men from Orient land
The King of kings lay thus in lowly manger
In all our trials born to be our Friend

Chorus 2
He knows our need
To our weakness is no stranger
Behold your King
Before Him lowly bend
Behold your King
Before Him lowly bend

I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.(John 8:12, NIV)

Key Point: What God commands

Verse 3 of “O Holy Night” says:

Verse 3

Truly He taught us to love one another
His law is love and His gospel is peace
Chains shall He break for the slave is our brother
And in His name all oppression shall cease
Sweet hymns of joy in grateful chorus raise we
With all our hearts we praise His holy name

Chorus 3

Christ is the Lord
O praise His name forever
His power and glory
Evermore proclaim
His power and glory
Evermore proclaim

A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. (John 13:34, NIV)

By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”(John 13:35, NIV)

18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, for he has anointed me to bring Good News to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim that captives will be released, that the blind will see, that the oppressed will be set free, 19 and that the time of the Lord’s favor has come.” (Luke 4:18-19, NLT)
