Sermon Outline

Joshua 1:1-9

How does God want us to live in the face of challenges and changes? He says “don’t be terrified” and “do not be discouraged.”

No one person or group of people have faced a bigger transition than what Joshua and the people of Israel faced. Joshua probably felt the pressure and thought “what do I have to offer after Moses?”

Uncertainty can rule in times of transition.

However, sometimes it can be the opposite. Overconfidence can also rule. Overconfidence is more dangerous than uncertainty.

Uncertainty is miserable and makes us forget who God is in our lives. Which side do you naturally lean toward?

Change is inevitable. How do we keep God involved in the narrative?

What can we learn from Joshua? Joshua saw some God-ordained changes.

Somewhere along his path, two things happened to Joshua:

  1. Joshua became extremely loyal to Moses.
  2. Joshua became a man of faith.

Joshua’s proximity to Moses put him in proximity to God. That prepared him for his greatest change. Proximity to God changes how we see troubles, challenges, and transitions in life. Are you getting closer to God?

When the report from the twelve spies came in, Joshua and Caleb were past judging on human wisdom. The people were not ready for this challenge and transition. How did they miss the lesson Joshua and Caleb had learned?

It is important to note the victories God has given you. Past victories speak to how we should see today’s trials. They are reminders of how God puts plot twists in our lives.

Our losses teach us as well. Where did I miss God and not obey?

Deuteronomy 34:9

Our lives, like Israel’s, are supposed to be ones of conquest, victory, and triumph.

In the moment of transition, God gave Joshua three instructions:

  1. Don’t sway from My word.
  2. Don’t be fearful or discouraged.
  3. As I was with Moses, so shall I be with you.

God’s constant presence is now a reality through His Son and the Holy Spirit. Draw near to Him.

God has a purpose for us in each stage of life.
