Matthew 7:21-23

In all things, we are called to serve Jesus faithfully and live for His glory.

The warning in this passage is about our spiritual certainty.

Jesus is pointing to people who are self-deceived.

These people build their security on their works.

Matthew 7:21

They will say, “Didn’t we do the will of the Father?”

Matthew 7:22

Giving to feed the poor, according to Jesus, stores up treasures in heaven for you.  It does not open the door of heaven.

These outward actions fall into one of two categories.

  1. An act intended to achieve righteousness which will fall short of God’s standard.
  2. An act of obedience from a heart made righteous by the Spirit of God.

The qualifying verse isMatthew 7:23.

Some workers of lawlessness are easy to see.

Love makes others harder to see.

Jesus said following Him would be hard.

Matthew 10:34-37

Lawlessness will destroy you and your family. The transformed heart will grieve lawlessness.

1 Corinthians 13:6

We can become workers of lawlessness.

Lawlessness is a sign of a heart far from God.

InGalatians 5:19-21, Paul lays out a short list of lawless works.  It’s not just the big issues of moral truth we face today.

The danger Jesus warns us of is that we can be self-justified and not Spirit-justified.

 

The good news is that all who call on His name can be saved.
