Sermon Outline

Songs of Christmas
O Come, O Come, Emmanuel

She will bring a son to birth, and when she does, you, Joseph, will name him Jesus—‘God saves’—because he will save his people from their sins.” This would bring the prophet’s embryonic revelation to full term: Watch for this—a virgin will get pregnant and bear a son; They will name him Immanuel (Hebrew for “God is with us”).(Matthew 1:21-23, MES)

Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel.(Isaiah 7:14, NIV)

Key Point: Jesus is God with Us!

Verse 1

O come, O come, Immanuel,
and ransom captive Israel
that mourns in lonely exile here
until the Son of God appear.

For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.(Mark 10:45, NIV)

Key Point: Jesus is Our Wisdom from God

The Spirit of the Lord will rest on him—the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding, the Spirit of counsel and of might, the Spirit of the knowledge and fear of the Lord… (Isaiah 11:2, NIV)

Verse 2

O come, O Wisdom from on high,
who ordered all things far and nigh;
to us the path of knowledge show
and teach us in its ways to go.

…the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere.(James 3:17, NIV)

Key Point: Jesus is Our Mighty Lord

Verse 3

O come, O come, great Lord of might,
who to your tribes on Sinai's height
in ancient times did give the law
in cloud and majesty and awe.

At that time they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. (Luke 21:27, NIV)

Key Point: Jesus is Our Root of Jesse

Verse 4

O come, O Branch of Jesse's stem,
unto your own and rescue them!
From depths of hell your people save,
and give them victory o'er the grave.

In that chapter Isaiah writes: 1 A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse;from his roots a Branch will bear fruit. 10 In that day the Root of Jesse will stand as a banner for the peoples; the nations will rally to him, and his resting place will be glorious. (Isaiah 11:1, 10, NIV)

Key Point: Jesus is Our Key of David

To the angel of the church in Philadelphia write: These are the words of him who is holy and true, who holds the key of David. What he opens no one can shut, and what he shuts no one can open.(Revelation 3:7, NIV)

Verse 5

O come, O Key of David, come
and open wide our heavenly home.
Make safe for us the heavenward road
and bar the way to death's abode.

Key Point: Jesus is Our Dayspring

Verse 6

O come, Thou Day-Spring, come and cheer
Our spirits by Thine Advent here;
Disperse the gloomy clouds by night,
And death's dark shadows put to flight.

78
Through the tender mercy of our God,With which the Dayspring from on high has visited us;79 To give light to those who sit in darkness and the shadow of death, To guide our feet into the way of peace.(Luke 1:78-79, NKJV)

in one the hearts of all mankind.
Bid all our sad divisions cease
and be yourself our King of Peace.

My kingdom is not of this world. …my kingdom is from another place. (John 18:36, NIV)
