Sermon Outline

Matthew 5:17-20

What is the law? In the first five books of the Bible are the Books of the Law.

The law was there to reveal the impossibility of man to meet the holy standard of God.

What does Jesus say?

Matthew 5:17

There were three recognized laws.

  • Ceremonial Law
  • Civil Law
  • Moral Law

God was setting Israel apart for Himself. They were a people whose lives should have shown the glory of God.

Romans 7:10-14

The law lays out the moral standard, but the flesh produces sin.

Jesus came not to abolish the law, but to fulfill the law.

On the cross and through His life, Jesus fulfills the law.

Matthew 5:20

We don’t bring a sacrifice to the altar, we put faith in the perfect sacrifice.

We are free from the law.

In Romans, we see what the Holy Spirit reveals.

Romans 4:20-25

Romans 5:1-2

Justified - Just as if we had not sinned.

What about the moral law? Can we go and sin?

Romans 6:1-4

How do we do this?

Romans 7:6

Romans 14:17-18

Romans 6:14-15

Jesus has fulfilled and abolished the law. We are not slaves to rules.

In Jesus’ kingdom, the new covenant with Him, we have the Holy Spirit.

Hebrews 8:7-10

What is the loudest voice in your life?

When we welcome the Holy Spirit into our lives daily, the Holy Spirit’s voice grows louder.

Prayer – Lord Jesus:

  • I want to live in Your kingdom.
  • May the voice of your Spirit be the loudest voice in my life.
  • I receive the grace the Father offers me in Your name, deliver me from the hold of sin.
