The Sabbath

Luke 6:1-11

In these verses Luke approaches major topics:
The Sabbath, leaders, healing, demons and the teaching of Jesus.

All of these would have been seen as major departures from the teaching and authority of the day.

The Sabbath
Sabbath simply means to cease or desist.

It is first mentioned in Genesis 2:1-3.

Sunday is the first day and Saturday is the seventh day.

Saturday is the Sabbath.

The Sabbath is encoded in the law
Exodus 20:8

In early Old Testament times the Sabbath was rest from work and expression of faith.

The Sabbath was a rest from work for two significant reasons:

  1. recognition in our hearts that God was the Creator.

  2. a sign to the world. 

In the early days it was simply rest, but it became more defined throughout the prophets.

In intertestamental times, they developed thirty-nine categories of activities forbidden on the Sabbath.

Legalism typically turns to acts of justification or control and manipulation.

Mark 2:27

Jesus, cutting through the tradition, asks:
Luke 6:9-11

Jesus was not breaking scriptural law but traditional law.

How we view the Sabbath:

  • We need a Sabbath to rest and to honor God.

  • Jesus freed us from the legal/traditional bonds of the Sabbath.

  • In the New Testament the day to honor Jesus was moved to Sunday.
    -  Resurrection
    -  Clear distinction of faith and testimony to who we follow

  • We need a time set aside to testify to our family and friends.

Isaiah 56:1-8

This is a principle:

  • The keeper shall be blessed.

  • Others shall be gathered in.


Hebrews 4:9-11
Rest from works and put faith in Jesus.
