Sanctification

Sanctification is an act of separation from that which is evil and of dedication unto God.
1 Thessalonians 5:23,  Hebrews 13:11–12

Three Aspects of Sanctification

1.  Positional and Instantaneous Sanctification -Philippians 3:8–9

This occurs instantly by faith in Christ at the moment of conversion.

Justification is what God does for us, while sanctification is what God does in us. Both occur at salvation.

When God justifies us, He declares us righteous. When He sanctifies us, we become righteous.

Justification puts us into a right relationship with God, but sanctification shows the fruit of a right relationship with God.

2. Practical and Progressive Sanctification

Philippians 2:12–13
Are we saved by works? No. Work out our salvation.

Romans 8:12–15
It should be obvious that we are not completely holy.

So God starts where we are but we are called to grow in our nature in Him.

This happens by:
A.  The Word - Hebrews 4:12

  • Bible study
  • Preaching
  • Teaching

B.  The Holy Spirit - Galatians 5:16–18,  Galatians 5:25

We must respond and cooperate with the Holy Spirit.

Colossians 3:1–2

The mark of maturity is not perfection but upward aspiration.

2 Corinthians 3:12–18

3. Final Sanctification - 1 Corinthians 15:51–52

The anticipation of perfection is the doctrine of glorification.
