“Emmanuel Shall Come To Thee”

Discovering the Gospel In the Songs of Christmas
December 16, 2018

Waiting

The Christmas song we are looking at today could be titled “The Anxious Waiter.”

Each verse starts with “O Come.”

The original seven verses each begin with a messianic title from the scriptures that prophesied and foreshadowed Jesus’ coming.

In this song we celebrate the truth that we can be set free from the captivity of sin

The Old Testament law reminds us of how broken our nature is. In Jesus coming we find the promise of being healed.

When Jesus came we could be saved from sin

Freedom from sin, living life our own way, is not something we have to wait for. It is ours today.

However, much of the song is about hope in waiting.

The rest of these verses point towards the second coming of Jesus, when all things shall be new.

Keep in mind that faith in God has a strong element of waiting for His promises

The words to this song proclaim the hope we have as we wait

In the meantime, you may have an individual promise.

Faith is about waiting with joyful expectation when the answer doesn’t seem to be there.

God has promised you something and He will come through.
