1 Corinthians 12:27-31

1 Corinthians 12:27-31

God has appointed:
Apostles

  • There were 12 Apostles and one born out of due season and they had a specific role.
  • Some see Apostle as an office ministry of the church.

Ephesians 4:11-12

The gift of apostle is the special ability that God gives to certain members of the Body of Christ to assume and exercise general leadership over a number of churches with an extraordinary authority in spiritual matters that is spontaneously recognized and appreciated by those churches.

Some say that the Apostle has to also have the ability to go and start churches in fields of ministry that are new.

They would define Apostle as Missionary. Their argument is that the word missionary is rooted in the Latin “to send” while the word apostle comes from the Greek “to send.” Both are sent ones

Prophets
In the same way, many believe that the role of the prophet came to an end after the 1st Century Church. They see the prophet as the local leader of the church when it did not have the Bible.

However, we see many passages that encourage the gift of prophecy.

The gift of prophecy is the special ability that God gives to certain members of the Body of Christ to receive and communicate an immediate message of God to His people through a divinely-anointed utterance.

In our day, all utterances are to be judged

  • Do they match the Bible
  • Do they seem right to the rest of the Body

Teachers
Whether a gift or an office, this still functions today.

The gift of teaching is the special ability that God gives to certain members of the Body of Christ to communicate information relevant to the health and ministry of the Body and its members in such a way that others will learn.

Two other clearly defined gifts

  • Helps: This may be the broadest gift as far as people in the church having it. This is simply people helping others in life and ministry as a service to God and the church.
  • Administration: This deals with church leadership and organization.

1 Corinthians 12:29-31

Not everyone does these things.
He leaves some off the list: helps and administration.
He puts some on the list that need explanation.

Are all prophets? Not in the office sense, but we are all called to eagerly desire the higher gifts.

Do all speak in tongues? Not is the sense of having a message for interpretation in the church, but he encourages all to seek the prayer language in their lives
