Lesson Fifteen - Generosity and the Poor

2 Corinthians 9:6-15

Generosity is not a single action it is an attitude.
Generosity has less to do with our money and more to do with our heart.

Two types of people: the rich and the poor
Proverbs 14:20; 19:4; 19:6,7; 18:23; 10:15

How would you describe your own reactions to the poor?

Scripture’s Observation of the Rich and Poor:
The poor are

  1. Disliked/hated by all

  2. Lower on the social scales

  3. Deserted by their friends

The rich are

  1. Befriended by many

  2. Higher on the social scales

  3. Sought after for their gifts

  4. Putting their confidence in their wealth

Poverty impacts on many levels: socially, financially, and relationally.

Causes of poverty

  1. Love of sleep (6:10-11; 20:13)

  2. Hastiness (28:22; 21:5)

  3. Lovers of pleasure (21:17)

  4. Drunkenness and gluttony (23:21)

  5. Lack of diligence (10:4)

  6. Ignoring instruction (13:18)

  7. All talk; no action (14:23)

  8. Follows worthless pursuits (28:19)

What does scripture say should be my response to poverty and the poor?
The poor and the rich are both created by God.
Proverbs 22:2; Proverbs 29:13

God’s response to poverty and the poor is generosity.
Attributes of a generous person:

  1. Has a bountiful eye (22:9)

  2. Shares his portion with the poor (22:9)

  3. Walks in integrity (28:6)

  4. Has understanding (28:11)

  5. Defends the rights of the poor and needy (31:9)

  6. Stewards his resources. (6:1-5)

  7. Is thankful (1 Corinthians 9:6-15)

God rewards us for our generosity.
Proverbs 28:27; Proverbs 19:17; Proverbs 28:8
Proverbs helps us to unravel what the LORD says about wealth.

God rewards a generous heart, but He warns us against ignoring the poor.
Proverbs 21:13; Proverbs 22:16; Proverbs 17:5 / 14:31

Remember, our generosity showcases the love of God.
