Lesson Twelve - Words Of The Wise

Proverbs 13:3
This is a simple instruction about how much we talk.

James 1:19
Here is a great question to ask yourself: Do I really listen when in conversations with others?

A great listening technique, especially when you are trying to understand the other person, is to repeat in your own words what they said. “So you are saying…”

This passage is really about the person who just puts their mouth on autopilot and lets it go.

If you have a tough time with conversations, let me give you a few ideas:

  • We learn more by asking questions and listening.

  • When asked a question, give more than one-word answers

  • Ask reciprocal questions and listen.

Proverbs 16:21

There is a time to say something and there is a time to wait.

The discerning person understands the atmosphere in the room and the appropriateness of the time.

The discerning person is kind in their words

Harsh words stir up harsh replies, while kind, patient words increase the ability to hear and receive

Proverbs 16:22
A fool is someone who is using wisdom from the world instead of God. It is folly.

Proverbs 16:23
Two sayings:

“The heart of fools is in their mouth; but the mouth of the wise is in their heart.”

“The heart of the wise will consider what proceedeth from his mouth; and on his lips he will carry prudence.”

Proverbs 16:24
There is a difference between a cheerleader and an adviser. We need to know who people are in our lives.

A good adviser spends a lot of time cheerleading

This isn’t vain flattery; this is constructive encouragement

Gracious words are a dessert to the soul; they bring health into our being.

Try being gracious this week.

Set it as a goal to pray for wisdom and to be known as gracious.
