Prequel Part 2

Luke 1:35-38

Luke is building certainty
Two things become clear.

  1. Jesus is the Messiah promised in the Old Testament.

  2. Jesus is for all mankind.

What we have in the first three chapters is most likely a narrative of Mary

She has been chosen to have “the Son of the Most High.”

She is a virgin. How can this be?  The Holy Spirit will overshadow you

This is similar to the way the world was created.
Genesis 1:1-2

Without this truth all the rest of the redemptive story falls apart.

The birth place of Jesus is another step in fulfillment of prophecy. He would be born in Bethlehem.

The Shepherds
There was a lot of prejudice.
The shepherds are another sign of Jesus tearing down barriers and lifting up people

The value of people is one of the startling messages of Jesus, and completely anti-cultural.

Luke 2:28-32
A light for the Gentiles

Luke 2:50-52

The Baptism of Jesus
Luke 3:21-22

Genealogy
Luke 3:23

Matthew and Luke both give us a genealogy.

  • Matthew’s traces Joseph’s family back to David

  • Luke’s traces back through Mary

Luke traces back to Adam. Why?
Because Jesus is not just the Savior of the Jews, He is the Savior of the all mankind and the Son of God.

This is the foundation of certainty.
Written in the lifetime of Mary and the Apostles
Recognized in the earliest days of the church as divine truth and revelation

The story now turns fully to the ministry...
