The Holy Spirit Part 2: Evidence of the Holy Spirit

Acts 2:1–4

Here is the question believers must answer in regard to the Holy Spirit and His work in our lives:
Do we believe 2 Timothy 3:16?

If yes, then the question is:
Do you believe that the book of Acts is scripture?

The two big arguments that Christians use against Holy Spirit Baptism today are:

  1. Acts is primarily a book about church history not doctrine.
  2. This baptism was for the Apostolic Age.

They use 1 Corinthians 13:8–13.
They define “when the perfect comes,” as being the Bible.

Pentecostals believe that “the perfect” refers to Jesus and His rule

Mark 16:17

Acts 2:1–4
What happened?

  1. Sound like a mighty rushing wind
  2. Tongues of fire
  3. Filled with Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues

Persecution of the Church led by Saul breaks out.
Acts 8:4–8; Acts 8:12–17

The Conversion of Saul – Acts 9:17
Later, Paul, when bringing instruction and correction to the church in Corinth would write
1 Corinthians 14:18.

The Gentile’s House – Acts 10:44–48

Paul at Ephesus – Acts 19:1–6

There are two primary functions of the Holy Spirit
1 Corinthians 14:1–5

  • The one who speaks in tongues speaks to God. Personal Prayer
  • He utters mysteries. We pray for things led by the Spirit.
  • The person who prays is built up. Strengthened by the Spirit.
  • The Holy Spirit wants us all to speak in tongues.

Primary function one: A prayer life in partnership with the Spirit that leaves us built up.
1 Corinthians 14:13–15

Primary function two: 1 Corinthians 12:4–11
We see here gifts that are given to each one individually as the Spirit directs.
1 Corinthians 12:27–31

Here is the difference: Baptism in the Holy Spirit is for everyone, gifting in the Holy Spirit is for some.

1 Corinthians 14:5
The gift of the Holy Spirit is for the building up of the Church.

1 Corinthians 14:6–13
1 Corinthians 14:39–40

This is all about decency and order in the church.

1 Thessalonians 5:19–21

Pastors and elders are supposed to judge the word.
