The Holy Spirit Part 3: Life in The Spirit

Galatians 5:16–21
We are born with a sin nature.

In other words, our nature leans towards actions that are harmful to ourselves and others.

This is determined by the judgement of the Creator. It is this sin nature that separates us from God.

When we are born again we are given a new nature in the Spirit; we call this regeneration.

Our minds and our hearts have always been influenced by the sin nature, but now we want our nature to be fully submitted to the Spirit of God.

We call the sin nature the desires of the flesh.

We are so comfortable with them that we need to have them identified to eliminate excuse.

The sin nature in us all needs to be tempered.

Once we are saved we also need to cooperate with the development of the fruit of the Spirit.

Galatians 5:22-25

Let’s just look at two.

Love
Here is a real marker for true Christianity.

How do I feel about those who disagree with me?

The love we are called to is a love that “wants the best for others.”

This is not a love that gives into others’ desires of the flesh, but a love that does not see those different from us in hate

Peace
This world offers us many opportunities to worry.

How do we escape worry?
There is a formula:Philippians 4:4–9

Here are steps to peace:

  1. Rejoice in the Lord always.
  2. Be reasonable.
  3. Pray with thanksgiving.
  4. Present your request to God.
  5. Think about the right things.
  6. Practice the right things.

Here is the key to the fruit of the Spirit:

  1. Control the desires of the flesh.
  2. Make yourself accountable.
  3. Cooperate with the Holy Spirit and let His fruit develop in you.

When you are acting outside the fruit of the Spirit, ask yourself, “Why?”
