Sermon Outline

A Chosen People, A Royal Priesthood, A Holy Nation
(1 Peter 2:1-12)

9 …you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. 10 Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.
(1 Peter 2:9-10, NIV)

Key Point: A New Identity

  1. You are a chosen people

Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy. (1 Peter 2:10, NIV)

  2. You are a royal priest.

Israel…you will be for me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.(Exodus 19:6, NIV)

  3. You are a holy nation.

Key Point: A New Way of Life

  1. Chosen to be foreigners and exiles.

11 Dear friends, I urge you, as foreigners and exiles, to abstain from sinful desires, which wage war against your soul. 12 Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us. (1 Peter 2:11-12, NIV)

My kingdom is not of this world.(John 18:36, NIV)

our citizenship is in heaven…(Philippians 3:20, NIV)

  2. Called to serve as priests.

4 As you come to him, the living Stone—rejected by humans but chosen by God and precious to him—5 you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. (1 Peter 2:4-5, NIV)

  3. Commanded to be holy.

Now that you have purified yourselves by obeying the truth so that you have sincere love for each other, love one another deeply, from the heart. (1 Peter 1:22, NIV)

1 Therefore, rid yourselves of all malice and all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander of every kind. 2 Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, 3 now that you have tasted that the Lord is good. (1 Peter 2:1-2, NIV)
