DISCOURAGEMENT IS A DECEPTION OF THE ENEMY.

My heart pounds in my chest. The terror of death assaults me. Fear and trembling overwhelm me, and I can’t stop shaking. Oh, that I had wings like a dove; then I would fly away and rest!  [Psalm 55:4-6 NLT]

We were crushed and overwhelmed beyond our ability to endure, and we thought we would never live through it. [2 Corinthians 1:8b NLT]

My heart is breaking as I remember how it used to be. I walked among the crowds of worshipers, leading a great procession to the house of God, singing for joy and giving thanks amid the sound of a great celebration! Why am I discouraged? Why is my heart so sad? I will put my hope in God! I will praise him again — my Savior and my God! [Psalm 42:4-5]

Five Ways the Psalmist Responds to Discouragement:

1. HE AFFIRMS WHO GOD IS.

I hear the tumult of the raging seas as your waves and surging tides sweep over me. But each day the Lord pours his unfailing love upon me… [Psalm 42:7-8a NLT]

2. HE SINGS THROUGH THE DARKNESS OF NIGHT.

and through each night I sing his songs, praying to God who gives me life. [Psalm 42:8b NLT]

3. HE PREACHES TO THE SOUL.

I will put my hope in God! I will praise him again – my Savior and my God! [Psalm 42:5b NLT]

4. HE REMEMBERS PAST EXPERIENCES.

Now I am deeply discouraged, but I will remember you… [Psalm 42:6 NLT]

5. HE THIRSTS FOR MORE OF GOD.

As the deer longs for streams of water, so I long for you, O God. 2I thirst for God, the living God. [Psalm 42:1-2a NLT]
