Introduction to Spiritual Gifts

The role of the Holy Spirit is of highest importance to our lives and to the work of the Kingdom of God in the church and the world.

1 Corinthians 12-14 is all about the Holy Spirit working in our lives and in the church.

It is God’s desire that we are properly informed.

The gifts of the Holy Spirit from the very beginning have been abused by ignorant men.

Understanding a little bit about Corinth and Paul's relationship with them will help us get a grip of what is going on here.

At the time of this writing, Corinth was a major city of trade. It was a metropolitan area.

1 Corinthians 6:9-11

Paul arrived here on his second missionary journey, stayed a year-and-a-half, and established the local church.

The church was troubled and out of order.

Outline of 1 Corinthians:

Unity - 1:10-3:23

Morality - 5:1-6

Marriage - 7:1-40

Liberty - 8:1-11:1

Men and women in church - 11:2-16

Communion - 11:17-34

Spiritual Gifts - 12-14

The resurrection - 15

Stewardship - 16:1-4

Personal Greetings - 16:5-24

We will focus on 12-14 and the Holy Spirit in our lives and in the church.

1 Corinthians 12:1-7

Some strange things have been happening under the name of the Holy Spirit.

Today, we would say that any prophetic proclamation that denies obedience to Jesus as revealed by the scripture is false

You can have talents even if you are not a follower of Christ.

Spiritual gifts are given at salvation and are a manifestation of the Spirit flowing through the believer.

Three key thoughts:

  1. Each person gets some gift mix.
  2. Gifts come as God orders them.
  3. They are for the common good.

You have a gift. Each member is to express his or her gift

  • so the church may be built up,
  • so people can be ministered too, and
  • So God may be glorified in the world.
