Sermon Outline

James 1:19-20

Today we are in a national debate. I want to use this as an illustration but remember, this is about all conflict

Some parts of our national debate are simple and should be easy to agree on: racism is wrong

Some don’t want to accept this, on both sides of the argument, but this is a Jesus concept.

Some issues in the national debate are complicated.

The Christian is supposed to:

  • be a voice in social debates,

  • influence culture, and

  • be peacemakers

Our influence always starts with prayer

Prayer allows us to hear from God and invites God to move in our atmosphere

James 1:5

Right now we are in a time of rage and shouting

Right now the most important thing we can do for our country is pray

James gives us navigational direction for disagreement from God.

James 1:19-20

  1. Be quick to listen.

  2. Be slow to speak.

  3. Be slow to anger.

Anger does not produce the righteous outcome of God.

The foundation that helps us navigate difficulties is:

  • Love (wanting the best for others), and
  • Truth.

In our lives, our homes, and in our communities, the church is supposed to be peacemakers

Jesus is the greatest peacemaker of all. He changes our hearts and minds and breeds love and forgiveness
