“Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.” Matthew 5:8

What does it mean to see God?
No one can see God’s full glory and live. Exodus 33:15-23

No one has seen or can see God. 1 Timothy 6:15-16

While we are still on this earth, “seeing God” means perceiving, understanding, and sensing His reality.

It is Jesus who makes God the Father known to us. John 1:18; John 14:6-11

We will finally, truly see God in the New JerusalemRevelation 22:3-4

What does “pure in heart” mean?
Jesus taught that it was simply not enough to do the right things. Matthew 23:27-28

God looks beyond the outside of a person, which we can see, to the inside of a person, which ONLY He can see. 1 Samuel 16:7

This is a clear theme of the Sermon on the Mount: the heart matters more than actions.

God didn’t change His mind in the New Testament from what He said in the Old Testament. Psalm 73:1

Our actions have to be pure, but that’s not enough

Jesus came to heal our hearts.

What does the Bible say about the hearts of people?
Genesis 8:21
Jeremiah 17:9

People’s hearts are not good by nature.  Mark 7:21-23

So how do we become pure in heart?
We cannot make our hearts pure on our own. Proverbs 20:9

We confess
He is faithful
to forgive
and cleanse

Ezekiel 36:26
Jesus didn’t come just to teach us how to live righteously; He came to make us righteous. And righteous people live righteously.
