Lesson Five – The Acts of Wisdom

Proverbs 3:27-35 & Proverbs 4

Write down a time when you found yourself needing wisdom.

Scripture gives us a great guideline to describe the actions of the wise.

Actions of the Wise

The wise person learns from others.
Proverbs 4:1-4

Solomon gained wisdom from his father.

Wisdom is always available.

Learning from others is a choice

We are able to learn from others at any age.

The wise acquire more wisdom.
Proverbs 4:5-10

The first thing that Solomon tells his “sons” is to get Wisdom

  • Wisdom is the most valuable thing that we can acquire

Forgetting vs. turning away

  • Forgetting is a passive action.

  • Remembering something is an active action.

  • Turning away is both active and a deliberate choice.

Prize wisdom - Proverbs 4:8-9

  • If you get wisdom

  • If you prize her highly

  • If you embrace wisdom

Parable of the Tax Collector and the Pharisee
Luke 18:9-14;

Proverbs 3:35

The wise find freedom in their choices.
Proverbs 4:11-13

How many questions do you get in one day?

How many decisions do you have to make in a week?

Wisdom gives us freedom in our daily living.

Wisdom gives us freedom in the midst of crisis

  • Wisdom allows us to make decisions with confidence

  • Wisdom allows us to walk in a straight line.

  • In the middle of crisis, wisdom keeps us from falling flat on our faces

Solomon equates wisdom with life. He gives us three things to do:

  • Keep hold of instruction

  • Do not let go

  • Guard “her”

The wise choose the pathway of life.
Proverbs 4:14-19

Three clear instructions regarding the path of the wicked:

  1. Do not enter - Do not walk down that path; a forewarning

  2. Do not go - Turn aside; even if you have already started down that path

  3. Avoid - Do everything in your power to get away; also “to let go”

Characteristics of those who choose the path of darkness:

  • Their addictions control them

  • They betray their friends

  • They love violence and wickedness

  • Their support is obtained through these means

Proverbs 3:27-30

The wise guard their heart.
Proverbs 4:20-27

Wisdom is restorative. Even if we have walked down the path of darkness.

Wisdom is healing to all our body.

Proverbs 4:23 - Above all riches, honor, property, health, body, i.e., everything else, guard your heart.

Four ways to guard your heart:

  1. Put away crooked speech

  2. Look at the right things

  3. Ponder your actions

  4. Stay on the path set before you
