The Divine Nature - Week Three

2 Peter 1:3–8 (ESV)

Throughout all history one of the main strategies of the enemy of man’s soul has been false teaching

God inspires us toward the divine nature with His promises

The Church is called to help people become mature followers of Christ so we will learn to think, feel, and act like Jesus.

The foundation of all we do is a reflection of our faith

We are to “make every effort” to add to our faith.

Self-control
The Greek word we translate as self-control literally means “the ability to take a grip of oneself.”

The growing Christian will begin to exercise control over his appetites and attitudes.

Self-control comes by the work of The Word of God in our lives.

Hebrews 4:12 (ESV)

2 Timothy 3:16–17 (ESV)

The Word of God enlightens me to the areas of life where I need to exercise self-control.

Self-control speaks to the pleasures of man and his ability to judge them and position their life to reflect what is important.

Self-control speaks to the attitudes of the spirit

To be self-controlled, I have to:

  • Understand my appetites and attitudes.
  • Understand my triggers and how I can avoid them
  • Be willing to get accountability
  • Learn to walk in the power of the Spirit of God daily

We start by learning to despise the places in life where my appetites and attitudes are not aligned with God’s will.
