“To save us all from Satan’s power”

Discovering the Gospel In the Songs of Christmas
December 9, 2018

“God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen”
The lyrics first appeared in 1760, and the melody was first published in 1829. The song calls back to the appearance of the angels to the shepherds in Luke 2.

Our Condition: When we were gone astray

Isaiah 53:6

An important truth to mention here about Satan’s power: Satan is not behind every single act of sin and evil in the world or in your life.

Matthew 11:28

Our Enemy: From Satan’s power

Revelation 12:9

Satan & the Devil are both names and descriptions of our Enemy.

  • Satan: adversary or accuser
  • Devil: slanderer or liar

So what power does Satan have? To put it simply: limited.

Colossians 2:15

The Enemy’s strongest power lies in his unmatched ability to deceive and to distort the truth, which leads us to temptation to sin.

  • Deceives us by lying to us about God

    - Tells us that God isn’t good

    - Tells us that God doesn’t love us

    - Tells us that God doesn’t exist

  • Deceives us by lying to us about ourselves

    - Tells us that we don’t matter

    - Tells us that we have no value

    - Tells us that we aren’t worthy of love

    - Tells us that our sin is too great to be forgiven

    - Tells us that our faith isn’t real

  • Distorts God’s truth by:

    - Twisting God’s word

    - Subtracting from God’s word

    - Adding to God’s word

    - Stealing God’s word

1 John 4:4

Our Savior: To save us all

1 John 3:8

Acts 26:18 (Paul’s call)

Hebrews 7:25

Hebrews 2:14

Luke 2:10-11
