Attitudes that Poison Relationships

1 Corinthians 13:1-7 (ESV)

We are made for relationships. Relationships are supposed to be fun, enjoyable, and celebratory.

1 Corinthians 13 is the defining passage for love. Love is the foundation for all healthy relationships.

Agape wants the best for another.

Agape is not a feeling; it’s a determination. Agape comes from The Spirit of God being invited to live and rule in us.

Agape is not arrogant.

Arrogance:

  • Blocks my ears from hearing the other person.

  • Unshackles the tongue to speak and to be harsh and condescending.

  • Dulls the emotions, thus making us insensitive.

  • Closes the mind to other thoughts and potential.

Arrogance demeans others and weakens you.

Kindness has to be expressed for it to be real; arrogance can be controlled in action and yet still be a silent killer in relationships.

Agape is not rude.

Rudeness is the opposite of graciousness.

Agape sees the value of each person and responds to everyone with kindness.

Agape does not insist on its own way

Stubbornness and selfishness combine to be a poisonous combination.
