Sermon Outline

2 Peter 1:3–8

Faith is one of those things that you have to have for yourself.

Biblical faith has an element of surrender in it.

Biblical faith calls me out of the darkness and into the light.

To have a relationship with God it begins with this kind of faith.

Faith:
Says God exists and He rewards those who seek Him.
Says God loved the world and sent His son, Jesus, so that whoever believes in Him will find eternal life.
Says when Jesus promised us life to the full, He can deliver.
Accepts the claim that Jesus paid for my sin on Calvary and I can rest in Him.
Says if I confess my sins and call on His name, I will be saved.

No one can do this for you. Faith is personal between you and God.

Ultimately faith impacts my motives.

The first evident motive changed in me is when I stop living to please myself and start living to please God.

Godliness
Motive is connected to the cause of my actions.

At the center of all the world’s pain is a selfish motive.

A God-centered motive is something we can judge, but not something we can create.

The second evident motive change is when I grow in my relationship with other believers.

Brotherly Affection
Dislike is a corruption of the spirit.

Brotherly affection sees others with patience.

We see ourselves through the microscope of scrutiny. We see others through the lens of grace.

Love
Agape is simply wanting the best for others.

This is the most life-changing thing God does in our lives to make us like Him.

A type of love that makes sacrifice feel righteous instead of resented.

Agape is the sacrificial love choice.
