1 Corinthians 13

Many books of the Bible, and themes in the Bible, have a key scripture or passage.

These key passages can sum up an entire message in a few lines.
They stand alone and they are usually what people memorize.

A key passage does not have to be read in context of the passages around them to properly understand them.

John 3:16 is the key passage of the Bible.

Philippians 4:13 - Used as a key passage. What does this Scripture mean?

Philippians 4:10-13

Key verses stand alone:

1 Corinthians 13 is a key passage on love. We do get great insight to understand the context.

1 Corinthians 13:1-3 - Love is translated from agape. Agape love “wants the highest good.”

Agape is fundamental to all actions having value.

  • tongues
  • prophecy
  • knowledge
  • faith
  • generosity

All need to flow out of the desire to lift others up.

1 Corinthians 13:4-7 - The definition of how love acts. It is not a feeling but an action.

1 Corinthians 13:8-10 - Love is never overcome by circumstances.

The question that arises from this passage that brings division among believers is, “When does the perfect come?”

  • Some say the perfect came with the recognition of the scriptural canon. Therefore, all the gifts have passed away.

  • Others say that the perfect comes when Jesus returns to reign.

Even now we know in part and prophesy in part. We don’t have the full picture and are careful to judge all gifts against the scripture and spiritual leadership.

1 Corinthians 13:11-13 - This is a key to when the perfect comes. Even with scripture, there are things we see dimly; but when Jesus comes it will be face to face.

When we see Him our eyes will be opened to know fully as I am known fully right now.

Now faith, hope and love abide.

The greatest is love.
