The Book of Colossians


The Historical context:
Setting: 

  • The city of Colossae was a city of Phrygia located about 120 miles east of Ephesus in Asia Minor, where we find Turkey today.


Author:

  • Paul is the author of Colossians.
  • The letter was written while Paul was in prison in Rome in years 60-62 AD.
  • Ephesians and Colossians were written close together. This letter was also to go to Laodicea after it was read in Colossae. Colossians 4:16.



Structure:
The general structure of the book is twofold:

  • Chapters 1 and 2 are focused on theology.
  • Chapters 3 and 4 are on practical matters.



The outline of Colossians:

  • 1:1-2 Paul’s greeting to those in Colossae
  • 1:3-2:23 The good news of Christ
  • 3:1-4:6 Living the new life in Christ
  • 4:7-18 Paul’s final instructions and greetings



Through the book:

  • Paul addresses the issues in a systematic way by telling them who Christ is and what He has done.
  • Paul writes a poem about Christ being supreme. Colossians 15-20
  • We see the freedom from rules and a new life in Christ. Colossians 2:6-2:24
  • The last instruction is to pray. Colossians:2-6
