WHY CALVARY?

51st Anniversary

Luke 23:33–34 (ESV)

Christians today have a great affection for the word Calvary and the place Calvary, but let’s remember it has been redefined by the act of Jesus there.

Calvary was just a small hill outside of Jerusalem.

While three of the Gospel translations use the word Golgotha, Luke uses the Hebrew Aramaic translation, Calvary. They both have the same meaning, the Place of the Skull

Calvary is where the prime act of Jesus took place on this planet.

  • At Calvary He paid the redemptive price for us.
  • At Calvary all men can have a second chance

Calvary is the place Jesus died so we could have new life

Calvary is not just the name of our church; Calvary is where the world was forever changed, and we were given the opportunity to know God and to live life to the full

Jesus says, “You must be born again.”

Jesus tells us this is a work of the Spirit upon the life of a person.

We call ourselves Calvary and we put up a cross, not as a symbol of death:

  • It is a symbol of life.
  • It is a symbol of love.
  • It is a symbol of celebration.
  • It is a symbol of forgiveness.
  • It is a symbol of hope.
  • It is a symbol of second chance.
  • It is a symbol of remembrance.

Jesus went to Calvary to pay the debt to justice that God requires, and to offer the gift of love that God’s nature demands

Those who do that can truly say,
"WE are Calvary!”
