Sermon Outline

So God created human beings in his own image. In the image of God, he created them; male and female he created them. Then God blessed them and said, “Be fruitful and multiply. Fill the earth and govern it…  [Genesis 1:27-28a NLT]

1. God created and embodied human sexuality as male and female.

Then the Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper who is just right for him.” [Genesis 2:18 NLT]

He gave names to all the livestock, all the birds of the sky, and all the wild animals. But still there was no helper just right for him. So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep. While the man slept, the Lord God took out one of the man’s ribs and closed up the opening. Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib, and he brought her to the man. “At last!” the man exclaimed. [Genesis 2:20-23a NLT]

So God created human beings in his own image. In the image of God, he created them; male and female he created them. Then God blessed them and said, “Be fruitful and multiply. Fill the earth and govern it…  [Genesis 1:27-28a NLT]

This explains why a man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two are united into one. [Genesis 2:24 NLT]

2. God created marriage as a faithful covenant relationship between one man and one woman for a lifetime.

“Haven’t you read the Scriptures?” Jesus replied. “They record that from the beginning ‘God made them male and female.’” And he said, “‘This explains why a man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two are united into one.’ Since they are no longer two but one, let no one split apart what God has joined together.” [Matthew 19:4-6 NLT]

Then why did Moses say in the law that a man could give his wife a written notice of divorce and send her away?” they asked. Jesus replied, “Moses permitted divorce only as a concession to your hard hearts, but it was not what God had originally intended. [Matthew 19:7-8 NLT]

At that moment their eyes were opened, and they suddenly felt shame at their nakedness. [Genesis 3:7a NLT]

3. Humanity’s disobedience brought sexual brokenness.

We live in a world of broken sexuality.

4. Christ’s obedience brings sexual wholeness.

Some of you were once like that. But you were cleansed; you were made holy; you were made right with God by calling on the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God. [1 Corinthians 6:9-11 NLT]
