Oahs

Matthew 5:33-37

“Again, you have heard that the ancients were told…”

Definition of character: one of the attributes or features that make up and distinguish an individual

Jesus says: “But I say to you, make no oath at all…”

There were some who were making false oaths.

The point is, that if you are telling the truth you don’t need to make an oath.

Jesus was dealing with the character of the person.

God hasn’t called us to be average or just fit in.

Oaths

You shall not swear falsely or make a vow you can’t keep.

Examples of Old Testament oaths

  • Between Abraham and Abimelech which was man to man.

  • Hannah in 1Samuel chapter 1 makes a vow to God.

“Let your statement be, ‘Yes, yes’ or ‘No, no’…”

To be people of God, we must always speak the truth.

James 5:12

We should be people of grace.

“Anything beyond these is of evil.”

The word evil means: from the evil one.

Matthew 6:13

John 17:15

Christians should always tell the truth and let your “yes” be “yes” and “no,” “no.”
